Once considered one of the back rooms that deserved little attention, much less a designer touch, kitchens have certainly come a long way. These days, they are not only part of the home renovation plans; they have become statements of style and exquisite taste.

“Homeowners have become increasingly sophisticated and discerning. They want a kitchen that they can be proud of, a kitchen that reflects their lifestyle, personality and who they are and a kitchen that they can entertain or be entertained,” says Lim Wee Li, founder of Kitchen Culture.

He should know. After all, Lim can be considered the king of contemporary kitchens. He helms branded kitchen solution provider, Kitchen Culture, which offers well over 25 top designer kitchen brands from around the world. That’s why when CapitaLand was looking for a partner to outfit the kitchens at their ultra luxurious 56-storey residential development, The Orchard Residences, Kitchen Culture was their choice.

Nothing But the Best

In keeping with the rising demand of elite homeowners for top-end kitchens, each of the 175 units at The Orchard Residences boasts a Poggenpohl kitchen brought in by Kitchen Culture. Poggenpohl is an award-winning, German luxury kitchen cabinet brand that, at 120 -years old, is generally recognised as the oldest in the world. Known internationally for its quality, Poggenpohl is a perfect fit for a development that prides itself on being the benchmark for high living.

“The Orchard Residences incorporates the very best brands in their respective fields. The Poggenpohl kitchen system used is not just a branding exercise but comprises the best kitchen cabinetry,” says Peter Chan, Senior Project Manager of the Design Development Division at Kitchen Culture.

Much of the beauty of the Poggenpohl kitchen lies in the fact that form and function come together perfectly. German precision engineering ensures that the cabinets and drawers open and shut seamlessly and quietly. As is the current rage for kitchens, the drawers and many of the cabinets come without handles. Rigourous testing according to the DIN German standard of quality promises that the drawers, wall railing system and wall mounted cabinets can withstand high weight loads.

The kitchen cabinets are made from triple layer particleboard E1 grade formaldehyde emission which is environmentally friendly. In fact, Poggenpohl is one of the few brands available that carries the green label awarded by the Singapore Environmental Council. The cabinet doors are made of parapan acrylic in a mirror gloss finish which is the most expensive material available. It provides good UV resistance to colour change and is water and bacterial growth resistant. The shelving and internal finish are dirt and scratch resistant and is an exclusively patented Poggenpohl design. It also comes with an anti-tilt locking mechanism which prevents accidental tipping.

Meeting Modern Needs

Another mark of the modern kitchen is its ability to cater to the high life. The Orchard Residences come with a wet and dry kitchen, a luxury only the most spacious of homes can afford. This allows the dry kitchen to have an open concept that blends seamlessly into the living room, a design trend favoured by many of the best homes worldwide. The kitchen then becomes another area for entertainment and interaction. With that in mind, the lighting in The Orchard Residences’ dry kitchen makes use of halogen spot lighting that both highlights the kitchen as a showpiece and contributes to a warm, inviting aura.

Another latest trend in kitchen design that has been incorporated into The Orchard Residences is the use of contrasts.

“We have plain colours alongside highlights, in this case, a stronger timber veneer with random veins. We also have contrast in the finishes such as a mirror gloss for the plain coloured surfaces and a matte finish for the timber veneer,” says Chan.

As many residents of The Orchard Residences’ are wine connoisseurs, the units come with wine chillers on top of the usual refrigerators, coffee makers and microwave oven. SubZero, a brand renowned for top-of-the-line refrigeration systems, is the kitchen specialist for the development. Their hand-assembled chillers are often used in the best international developments.

Attention to Detail

Above all, prized kitchens are the ones that are designed to make the little tasks in life that much less of a chore. At The Orchard Residences, thoughtful touches have been added to the modern kitchen to put in leagues ahead of others. A built-in pull-out waste bin with separate waste compartments for sorting out waste of different materials is an especially thoughtful addition for the Earth-conscious.

When it comes to state-of-the-art modern kitchens, The Orchard Residences certainly sets the trend.
