Shoppers in Singapore can look forward to a new, refreshing retail experience at Plaza Singapura and The Atrium@Orchard come fourth quarter of 2012.

Strategically situated at the north gateway of Orchard Road with ION Orchard at the south gateway, The Atrium@Orchard has been undergoing asset enhancement works to convert two floors of office and decant space to retail space. Renowned international architect firm, Benoy, was appointed for the asset enhancement project which will see The Atrium@Orchard linked to Plaza Singapura on three floors in a seamless integration. The integrated mall will have approximately 625,000 square feet of retail space, with more than 350 shops providing exciting retail, dining and entertainment options, making it one of the largest retail malls on Orchard Road at about the same size as ION Orchard.

Seamless Design

Inspired by its proximity to the Stamford Canal which once linked Orchard Road to the sea, Benoy designed wave-like ribbons on the façade and canopy to evoke the idea of the ebb and flow of people and trade. The dynamic, elegant use of these ribbons unifies Plaza Singapura and The Atrium@Orchard in a seamless architectural façade, defining a new presence on Orchard Road.

Of the wave-like ribbons that dominate the design, David Buffonge from Benoy added, "The façade design draws from imagery derived from the energy, spontaneity, and beauty of flowing water with its rippling surface and lush forms of a tropical forest hanging over it."

Continual Value Creation Through Asset Enhancement

The seamless integration of Plaza Singapura and The Atrium@Orchard is part of CapitaMall Trust's (CMT) asset enhancement initiatives, which would be its major growth driver.

"These initiatives are expected to strengthen the competitive edge of the respective malls and bolster CMT's DPU (distribution per unit) growth for the next few years," said Simon Ho, CEO of CapitaMall Trust Management Limited.

"With an additional 127,000 square feet of retail space, it presents the opportunity for us to enhance the current offerings at Plaza Singapura and attract brands that are currently not represented here. With more exciting international fashion and dining options, it will definitely strengthen our position in trendy Orchard Road, "said Pauline Yeh, General Manager of Plaza Singapura and The Atrium@Orchard.

More to Come

When completed in 2012, the integrated Plaza Singapura and The Atrium@Orchard will be a new landmark mall on Orchard Road. It will also be the only shopping mall in Singapore that is linked to an MRT station with three intersecting MRT lines – Circle Line, North-South line and North East line.

"We are pleased to see that Plaza Singapura, one of the most established malls along Orchard Rd, is being refreshed yet again in this competitive retail environment. With the seamless integration between the two malls and an additional 120,000 sq ft of retail space, we believe that it will bring more shoppers to the mall," said Mr Tan Wee Ko, Chief Financial Officer of Challenger, who is a tenant at Plaza Singapura.

"Currently, Plaza Singapura is a one-stop shopping mall which is mainly targeting families and youth. With the integration, we will also attract PMEBs, creating an all-encompassing shopper profile for the mall," said Ivy Ang, Centre Manager of The Atrium@Orchard.

To keep shoppers in the loop, the mall intends to engage the public through online blogs and in-mall activities. When fully integrated, the new mall will be the choice destination with contemporary fashion, dining and lifestyle, where families and friends come together.

With the iconic ION Orchard on one side; and the new, seamless integrated Plaza Singapura-The Atrium@Orchard on the other, there is good reason to believe that Orchard Road will be filled with even more energy, excitement and beauty from end to end in 2012.
