The Star Vista, Buona Vista’s first major mall, is inviting everyone to come to its specially constructed music studio from 14 March to 19 April to record a song it has commissioned for this occasion. Dubbed ‘Project Celebrate’ because the initiative seeks to rally the nation in celebration of Singapore’s golden jubilee, it is a creative collaboration with Singapore Polytechnic (SP).

The Star Vista, Singapore’s first naturally cooled mall, is a lifestyle destination that continually seeks out new initiatives to engage its community.

“The Star Vista is a chill-out, lifestyle mall which has been actively engaging the community with different types of activities, ranging from free weekly exercise sessions (Kickboxing Monday, Zumba Tuesday and Yoga Thursday) to animal welfare adoption drives,” said Ms Elsie Goh, Centre Manager, The Star Vista.

“As a gathering place for the community, The Star Vista is excited to bring the community together to mark the nation’s golden jubilee. The end result of Project Celebrate in the form of a music video featuring people from all walks of life will be an expression of love for Singapore from the public. We want everybody to be a part of Project Celebrate.”

One in Song

At the heart of Project Celebrate is the locally composed song, ‘You & Me’.

“I have had this idea for some time – a song that can unite everyone – and I was just waiting for the right time. SG50 is a beautiful occasion to bring this initiative to life,” said Jacke Chye, Senior Manager, Marketing Communications, The Star Vista, of the birth of Project Celebrate.

“When we shared the idea with our partners, everyone felt that it would be unique and impactful, just right for SG50.”

As early as the second half of 2014, The Star Vista team was already hard at work looking for the right talent to compose the song because “it all begins and ends with the song”. That was when they came across Scarlet Avenue, a local band comprising Singaporean brothers Amos and Adam Ang.

The pair, in their twenties, has been writing songs and performing in cafes since 2005. They have an extended play (EP) album under their belt and are behind the theme songs of a few MediaCorp telemovies.

“They got the song right almost immediately. We wanted something that was celebratory, catchy and accessible. They managed to hit the right note with a melody so contagious it makes you want to kick up your heels and sing and dance along,” said Mr Chye.

The Ang brothers lived in France for six years when their parents went there to work. They were reminiscing about all the things they missed about Singapore then and the sense of unity at every year’s National Day celebrations when they wrote ‘You & Me’.

“We are thrilled to be able to pen a song for this monumental occasion. And to have the public record our song is such an honour. We can’t wait for that to happen,” said older brother Amos.

This will be a showcase to the world of what they are all capable of,” said Christian James Sethmohan, Course Chair for Diploma in Visual effects and Motion Graphics, Singapore Polytechnic.

To take part in this national project, simply visit The Star Vista during the specified times (see information box), register and sing.

“We want to put everyone into the song and video,” said Mr Chye. “Our target is for as many people as possible to turn up for Project Celebrate.”
