New Cool Hangout in the West
The new ultra-hip mall, JCube, adds colour to Jurong with Singapore’s only Olympic-size ice rink, first IMAX cinema in the suburbs and new-to-Singapore brands
Issue: May 2012
The recently opened JCube is home to Singapore’s only Olympic-size ice rink with a 460-seat gallery that provides rink-side entertainment for spectators and shoppers, as well as Singapore’s only rink-side dining experience
Nestled in the heart of the Jurong Lake District in Singapore is a new icy blue mall that boasts a unique faceted façade inspired by an ice cube. In addition to an iconic facade that reflects natural light by day and lights up like a jewel at night, the newly opened JCube also promises two mega-size entertainment options: Singapore’s first Olympic-size ice rink and the first IMAX theatre in the suburbs.
Inside this mall are five levels of retail space, spanning over 200,000 square feet of net lettable area, which offer endless shopping and fun-filled options for youths, PMEBs (professionals, managers, executives and businessmen) and families that live and work in Singapore’s West. Within short walking distance of the main transportation hub in western Singapore (Jurong East MRT and bus interchanges), JCube also heralds the first phase of the transformation of Jurong Lake District into a vibrant commercial centre. JCube is owned by CapitaMall Trust and managed by CapitaMalls Asia.
The Rink Master
One of JCube’s most exciting offerings is Singapore’s only Olympic-size ice rink that measures 60 metres by 30 metres and comes with a 460-seat gallery. It is designed to host activities such as recreational skating, figure skating, speed skating and ice hockey. Mall-goers can also enjoy an exclusive rink-side dining experience in Singapore and be treated to exciting rink-side action during ice hockey matches and skating performances.
From restaurants surrounding The Rink, diners are treated to exciting views of rink-side action
The Rink will be the perfect place to watch international competitions on figure skating, speed skating and ice hockey in future
Mr Lim Beng Chee, CEO of CapitaMalls Asia, said, “CapitaMalls Asia is pleased to have been awarded the contract to manage the ice rink at JCube. An entertainment-focused mall with extended hours, JCube and its ice rink will combine both retail therapy and ice sports. Shoppers can also exercise and get fit in the cool comfort of the rink. With its extended-hours dining options, JCube will become the meeting place for anyone with an interest in ice sports and a late-night hangout for people in the western part of Singapore. We will continue to work closely with the Singapore Sports Council to bring exciting events and activities to the rink and make ice sports easily accessible to all.”
If you are thinking of taking your first steps on the ice, The Rink has lessons on ice skating. The Singapore Ice Skating Association (SISA), in collaboration with the Singapore Ice Hockey Association (SIHA), has developed a national Learn-To-Skate programme known as SKATESTAR to cultivate the sport of ice skating in Singapore. Debuting in May, the programme teaches adults and children (above six years old) basic foundational skills of skating and enables them to continue to advanced skating techniques such as figure skating or speed skating. Advanced ice skaters who are interested in figure skating or ice hockey can contact the SISA and the Singapore Ice Hockey Association respectively for more information.
Ms Callie Yah, General Manager of JCube, said, “Shoppers can look forward to a whole new shopping, dining and entertainment experience at JCube, with the numerous brands making their Singapore debut with us. Other than Singapore’s first Olympic-size ice rink which will host international events and competitions, JCube will be home to the first IMAX cinema in the suburbs. Mall-goers will also enjoy extended-hours dining and Singapore’s only rink-side dining experience at JCube.”
On the fifth level of JCube is the first IMAX theatre in the suburbs of Singapore, which promises movie-goers larger-than-life movie magic with crystal clear images on the specially-designed screens, enhanced by state-of-the-art digital surround sound that fills the theatre.
Another thing everyone is talking about is the trendy offering of shops and restaurants at JCube. Think cool eateries, street fashion, information technology, sports and novelty shops. Among them are retail and food brands that are new-to-Singapore, which have chosen JCube to premiere their products.
Francfranc, a popular Japanese home and living store retailing modern and funky furniture, accessories and lifestyle products, has set up its first South-east Asia store in JCube which occupies a magnificent 9,300 square feet on Level 2.
Fashionistas rejoice as popular labels Baby Phat and Shana are set to make their Singapore debut at JCube.
Making its debut in JCube is Taiwanese street food café, Eat @ Taipei
For new eateries in town, visit the novel Taiwanese restaurant, Eat @ Taipei, that offers street eats and snacks such as vermicelli with oysters, braised pork belly rice, bubble tea and flavoured shaved ice, that serve up the authentic tastes of Taiwan. Alternatively, visit Capricciosa, the casual dining restaurant chain which originated from Japan with more than 30 years of history. Its authentic Italian fare includes specialty pastas that are handmade everyday and served al-dente. And for Matcha (green tea) lovers, Nana's Green Tea Café from Japan offers a wide selection of matcha drinks, desserts and savoury bites.
Innovative retail options also abound. Try BoardGames ReJuvenate which sells all manner of board games from the United States and Europe. And collectors of antique weapons will likely be engrossed in the world at Caesars, Singapore’s exclusive retailer and distributor of exquisite replica armours, guns and swords.
The excitement that JCube brings extends into the night. Night owls no longer need to travel to town to hang out. Several eateries at JCube have extended opening hours till midnight: American-style cafe Pique Nique; local Chinese restaurant Kungfu Paradise; casual restaurants Thai Express and Watami; fast-food outlet, McDonalds; Capricciosa; and kampong-style café, Old Town White Coffee.
