Singapore is turning 50 and the birthday celebrations have begun in earnest. Businesses around the island have been spreading the cheer with their own spin to the golden jubilee and none have been more enthusiastic than those in the F&B industry, after all we are a food paradise.

From specially concocted dishes infused with local flavours to SG50-inspired discounts and designs, Inside introduces some who are ever ready to help you get into the spirit of SG50.

Singapore Specials

When it comes to food, Singapore offers nothing if not variety. In honour of our nation’s 50th, some eateries have come up with Singapore-centric menus to let local tastes take pride of place.

Since the beginning of the year, Swensen’s has been introducing one new dish a month that incorporates local flavours as part of its SG50 menu. For this month only, you can savour Beef Rendang Baked Rice (S$13.90). The traditional Malay stew of beef and spicy sauce is given a fusion treatment. Served on a bed of baked rice with melted cheese and egg, the dish is topped with crispy prawn crackers. To ensure that the tender beef slices retain their juiciness, the chef prepares them separately from the thick gravy that packs a punch. Each mouthful pays homage to Singapore’s favourite stew.

Up ahead, Lobster Roll in Chilli Crab Sauce is what you can look forward to in April. Riding on the popularity of the Lobster Roll that has been popping up in menus island-wide, Swensen’s version marries the local must-have, chilli crab, and the New England specialty to create a truly original taste. Chunks of succulent lobster meat in sweet chilli crab sauce are stuffed into a fluffy-white hotdog bun, giving you a handy way to enjoy the local creation!

TWG Tea is re-launching the specially created Singapore Breakfast Tea in time for you to drink to 50 years of nation building. The trademark tea is the result of TWG Tea’s desire to come up with a blend that represents the Lion City and all its passions, convergence of cultures and heritage. The result is a natural mélange of green tea, black tea, rich vanilla and rare spices that yields a complex aroma with a sweet, lingering aftertaste, mirroring Singapore’s diversity. Singapore Breakfast Tea is also very versatile, much like the country itself. It can be enjoyed with or without milk, and tastes equally wonderful with both sweet and savoury foods.
