Fly Me To The Sky
ION Orchard celebrates a new high with the launch of ION Sky
Issue: Jan 2011
Launch of the highly-anticipated ION Sky caps a year of milestones for ION Orchard
If you are setting New Year resolutions, do make ION Sky a must-visit for 2011.
Offering an unrivalled 360-degree view from the highest point at Orchard Road, ION Sky is located on levels 55 and 56 of The Orchard Residences, which stands at an impressive 218 metres high above ION Orchard.
ION Orchard, which opened its doors in July 2009, raised the bar in retail by transforming the retail landscape with its unique blend of shopping, art and food. The opening of ION Sky not only marks the completion of the award-winning Orchard Turn project, which includes The Orchard Residences and ION Orchard, it is also a key milestone that reinforces ION Orchard’s landmark status.
“ION Sky is set to be the new focal point of Orchard Road,” said Ms Soon Su Lin, Chief Executive Officer of Orchard Turn Developments. “In keeping with the overall vision and theme of the development, ION Sky is an extension of the multi-sensory experience that ION Orchard delivers.”
Vantage View on Cloud Nine
Your journey to ION Sky begins at the ION Art gallery at level four, where you will be whisked into the skies via high-speed elevators aptly themed around an escape into the clouds. Hold on tight and get ready to be wowed by the spectacular 360-degree panoramic views that greet you once you step out to ION Sky.
Housing an observatory, an event space, and restaurant Salt grill by highly acclaimed Australian chef Luke Mangan, ION Sky will be a stunning backdrop for international runway shows, exclusive product launches as well as celebrity and themed parties.
Spectacular sights make ION Sky a perfect location for events and dining
If you are curious about the clouds and yearn to get an even better view of the surrounding landscape, make your way to the 6,000-square-foot observatory (admission by ticketed entry), which lets you experience the surrounding landscape in a unique way through the Behold™ telescope.
First seen at the world’s tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the Behold™ telescope is introduced for the first time in Asia at ION Sky. The device not only allows visitors to view the surrounding landscape in real-time but also uses state-of-the-art technology to bring the heritage of the areas to life.

Placed at strategic points along the path so you can pick which side of Orchard Road to view, you can even choose from different views on the manoeuvrable touch screen. ‘Live View’ allows you to see what is happening live on the streets by zooming in on people and buildings, whilst the ‘Day and Night View’ shows you pictures taken of the exact same spot at different times of the day. Pictures are updated every few weeks to reflect new buildings and changes in the city.
The space has also been designated as the world’s second official cloudspotting area by the British-based Cloud Appreciation Society. The society has teamed up with ION Sky to display a chart teaching you how to identify the ten main cloud types you can spot. Given the inspiring views, it won’t be long before you fall in love with the clouds!
Wine and Dine to Your Heart’s Content
And after you have satisfied your curiosity at the observatory, it’s time to indulge your taste buds in unparalleled quality dining. Food connoisseurs will appreciate the sky-high dining experience at Salt grill, an ambient, elegant 6,000-square-foot space set against the backdrop of the city skyline.
Salt grill oozes stylish ambience at any time of the day
Helmed by celebrity chef Luke Mangan, Salt grill is his sixth restaurant in his award-winning global restaurant empire. Set to be a fashionable urban restaurant delivering Mangan’s special brand of contemporary Australian cuisine, diners will enjoy his signature dishes made with the finest and freshest ingredients sourced directly from Australia.
Tuck into a gastronomic experience at the main dining area during lunch and dinner, as well as at the wine bar that offers all-day dining options. And if you are in the mood for some drinks, take the spiralling ramp up to the 56th floor, where the Sky bar awaits. Indulge in pre or post-dinner drinks, and enjoy the perfect ambience infused with romance and glamour.
So wine, dine or chill out in the company of clouds and stars; no matter what you choose to do, expect a memorable experience at ION Sky and start your year on a high!
