CapitaLand’s latest BCA Green Mark Champion Award reinforces its commitment to Green Buildings for living, working and playing

CapitaLand’s commitment as a Green builder pursuing environmental excellence to develop environmentally-friendly and sustainable properties is highly evident. Earlier this year, it was listed among the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World by Corporate Knights, and was listed in the Sustainability Yearbook 2012. Last year, it garnered the prestigious Asia Pacific Green Builder of the Year Award by Frost & Sullivan.

Its most recent win is the prestigious Green Mark Champion Award accorded by the Building and Construction Authority of Singapore (BCA) at the BCA Awards 2012 in Singapore last month. The Green Mark Champion Award recognises developers with a strong commitment towards corporate social responsibility and environmental sustainability. To be a Green Mark Champion, a company must attain at least 10 Green Mark Gold Awards, three Green Mark GoldPLUS awards and three Green Mark Platinum awards.
Since last year’s BCA Awards Night, CapitaLand has bagged a total of 19 Green Mark Awards including new and re-certified projects, and five provisional Green Mark Awards for its overseas projects. To date, CapitaLand has received 65 Green Mark awards (including nine provisional awards) across its properties in Singapore (51 awards), China (11 awards), Vietnam (two awards) and Malaysia (one award).

Mr Francis Wong Hooe Wai, Chairman of the CapitaLand Green Committee, said: “CapitaLand has all along been setting Green rating targets that are higher than mandatory legal requirements for its development projects. In Singapore, we are set to achieve a minimum Green Mark GoldPLUS rating for our projects, including new buildings and existing buildings undergoing major renovation. We have signed the BCA Green Pledge to show our commitment to attain higher energy efficiency for our existing buildings through BCA Green Mark certification by 2020.”

Investing in the Future Generation
To further its commitment towards corporate citizenship, CapitaLand, through its philanthropic arm, CapitaLand Hope Foundation, joined BCA in supporting the President’s Challenge to help the underprivileged in Singapore.
Since 2008, CapitaLand Hope Foundation has been supporting the children's charities of President’s Challenge. This gesture of philanthropy is just one of the ways the organisation shows it cares - a key thrust of CapitaLand’s Because iCare campaign this year.
Mr Liew shared, “As we stay committed to caring for our future, CapitaLand’s philanthropic arm, CapitaLand Hope Foundation, is pleased to do its part for the President’s Challenge once again with a S$35,000 donation which aligns with the Foundation’s focus in supporting the shelter, education and healthcare needs of underprivileged children.”

This year, CapitaLand has also more than doubled its number of Green Mark Platinum properties with five new awards, bringing the total to eight.
A new winner of the BCA Green Mark Platinum Award is CapitaGreen,a Grade A landmark office building in Singapore’s Central Business District that is slated to complete in the fourth quarter of 2014. The name, CapitaGreen, signifies the emphasis on the eco-friendly features of this office property. Its innovative and stunning facade design minimises solar heat gain with an energy-efficient double-skin high-performance glass with low emissivity and extensive vertical greenery. CapitaGreen’s building façade will have a 55 per cent green ratio which helps to reduce heat gain and a cool void in the centre core which channels air through the building.
CapitaGreen is also a showcase of state-of-the art energy-saving features: rainwater harvesting to irrigate the building’s plants, efficient chillers and zoning to reduce energy consumption and motion sensors at staircases and toilets, photo-sensors at offices and sun pipes at restaurants and gyms to channel natural light.
Live & Play in the Future
Through constant revitalisation and asset enhancement,CapitaLand also embarks on greening its existing buildings. This year, 18-year-old Junction 8 was awarded the Green Mark Platinum Award; while the nearly 40-year-old Plaza Singapura and 15-year-old Lot One Shoppers’ Mall were re-certified and both received the Green Mark Gold Award.
For these malls, energy-efficient features such as highly-efficient chiller plants, energy-efficient lights, photocell sensors, rainwater harvesting, extensive green landscaping, roof-top gardens, low emissivity glass and carbon monoxide sensors are some of the elements that are implemented in these green properties.
Following a S$38-million asset enhancement efforts, Bugis+ was awarded the Green Mark Platinum award
Located along Victoria Street, within the Bugis arts, culture, learning and entertainment district, is another Green Mark Platinum award winner, Bugis+. This mall successfully achieved Green Mark Platinum following a S$38 million asset enhancement due for completion in July this year. The mall’s chilled water and condenser water system has been re-designed to better improve efficiency, and energy-efficient lights are now used in circulation areas. Where applicable, environmentally-friendly products are used in daily maintenance and cleaning works while electrical and water sub-meters are installed in key locations to monitor and track their use and identify wastages and leakages. To heighten green awareness, tenants are encouraged to use energy-efficient lights and to participate in the mall’s recycling programme. A green educational corner has also been created within the mall for engagement programmes to increase general awareness.
Mixed development Bedok Residences / Bedok Mall at the heart of Singapore’s mature Bedok Town Centre is also a new Green Mark Platinum Award winner. It features a water-cooled air conditioning system for the Bedok bus interchange which uses less energy compared to air-cooled systems. Landscaped areas will be fitted with automatic drip irrigation coupled with rain sensors to conserve water and NEWater used for the cooling towers’ make-up water and irrigation. Other examples of its unique green features include green cement produced with less carbon emissions, and photovoltaic glass on public walkway canopies that generate electricity. Even the 583-unit Bedok Residences built atop the Bedok mall is constructed with environmentally-sustainable building material and fitted with energy-efficient lights and lift systems, solar panels on the roof and water-efficient sanitary fittings and wares. Rainwater will be collected and used to irrigate the landscape.

Overseas, CapitaLand achieved its first Green Mark Gold Award this year with Gurney Plaza in Penang, Malaysia. It is the first operating mall in Malaysia to be awarded Green Mark Gold by BCA. Other overseas properties certified by BCA over the last 12 months include CapitaMall Aidemengdun, Harbin; Citadines Gaoxin Xi’an; and Somerset Heping Shenyang projects in China.
